Ironic Twist seeking irony, because sarcasm clashes with my outfit

bluestate made Here's a Hint's current poll, pitting us against New Order, Duran Duran, Joy Division, Arcadia and Welbilt. I'd really like it if we got more votes than Duran Duran, so please go and vote for us.

Last night's Metric show was amazing. The club was completely packed with people who obviously adore Metric and Emily Haines and know all the words to every single song (but don't sing along too loudly). The first time I saw them, opening for The Stills, the set alternated between the dancey songs and the slower ones, but this time around they just rocked out. Even if a song started quietly, they quickly built it up. There were wailing guitars and flashing lights and a lot of movement, and the energy both on stage and in the audience was fantastic. Emily Haines' voice is so pretty... I couldn't see anything from where I was standing for most of the show, but just listning to her sing is completely worth it -- she almost sounds better live than she does on CD.

I didn't realize that I'd have a photo pass, but at least I had my little digital point-and-shoot. I'm pretty happy with the way some of the pictures turned out anyway. For the setlist, just click here. On the one hand, I don't like seeing the setlist before the show starts, but on the other hand, knowing that they weren't going to include "Succexy" allowed me to come to terms with it right away and just enjoy the show, instead of leaving the club a little bit disappointed that they didn't play it.

Metric @ 9:30

Metric @ 9:30

Two blurry ones I like:

Metric @ 9:30

Metric @ 9:30

Update: I realized that I forgot to mention the opening bands.

After hearing a single from their upcoming album, I was really looking forward to seeing Men, Women & Children (download the song here). When I checked the 9:30 Club site before leaving work, it showed that the order for the show was going to be The Islands / Men, Women & Children / Metric. With doors being at 5:30 and the first band going on at 6:00, I knew that I probably wouldn't make it from the office to the 9:30 in time to see the first band. Seriously, who did get there in time? Unless your office is walking distance from the club and you can leave work at 5:00, or maybe even 5:30, it seems close to impossibe. Yes, that leaves the high school kids, but don't they have like yearbook and sports and stuff? Anyway, when I got to the club at 6:30, it turned out that they'd switched things around at the last minute and that I'd missed Men, Women & Children's 30-minute set. I was curious about The Islands too, but from what I'd heard before going to the show, I knew that I wanted to see Men, Women & Children more than The Islands, so I was disappointed.

So, moving on to the opening band I did actually see. The Islands are a strange, strange band. There are seven of them. Two of them were playing string instruments, except when one of them switched over to the keyboards. Everyone was dressed in white. And I couldn't tell whether most of them aren't good at playing their instruments or if they are so good that they can play them in a way that gives the impression that they aren't good at playing their instruments. I'm not sure if that makes sense, but that's how I thought about it. To me, they frequently sounded dischordant and out of synch, but I admit that I tend to think that about certain bands other people love and think are in synch. Having said that, I actually enjoyed their set. It was interesting, and parts of it were quite pretty. And one of the songs even had a banjo.

stellastarr* have announced that their next single is "Love and Longing." It's my second-favorite song on the album, right after "Sweet Troubled Soul," so I approve.

stellastarr* - "Love and Loving" (MP3)

Considering how much buzz The Editors have, I'm very surprised that their 9:30 Club show with stellastarr* is not sold out yet.

Speaking of shows, I realized that I'll be out of town when the Yeah Yeah Yeahs come to town. Frownie face.

Also, I can't wait for SXSW to be over, because then I'll stop getting like 10 e-mails a day about great shows and parties I can't go to. Bands I won't be seeing at SXSW include Snowden, who recently signed to Jade Tree.

Snowden - "Anti Anti" (MP3)

Here in D.C., we have a new music blog, DanCeLouder. He posts a good variety of MP3s, including hip-hop, so check him out.

It's going to be a busy week.

Wednesday: iPod Jukebox. If my iPod wasn't broken, I'd go. I might go anyway, though. I really need to fix my iPod.

Thursday: Jeff and I are going to see Metric at the 9:30 Club. Opening are Men, Women & Children and The Islands. I'm enjoying this dance-able track from Men, Women & Children's upcoming album:

Men, Women & Children - Dance In My Blood" (MP3)

Plus, a pretty track from The Islands' upcoming album:

The Islands - "Rough Gem" (MP3)

Friday: The Agenda at Cue Bar. Stop by and say hello.

Saturday: bluestate at the Black Cat. Ms. WeirdCurves will be in town and DJing along with me and Kyle. And it's PL's birthday, so expect extra craziness.

Sunday: Post-bluestate brunch with puppies. Then I have to get on top of the bridal shower situation, since it's now less than two months away. Did I mention that we finally decided on bridesmaids dresses? And that I won the petticoat fight? I was strongly pro-petticoats, because if I'm going to be wearing a violet iridescent taffeta gown, we might as well go all the way.
